There are numerous movable wall operation systems available, which differ in terms of how they function and move. Understanding the mechanics of movable walls can help you to decide which type is best for your needs and budget. With this in mind, here’s our guide exploring how each movable partition operates.

What are movable walls?

Movable walls, also known as operable walls, are adaptable partitions that are used to separate or open up spaces. These flexible designs consist of individual panels that are top-hung from a concealed roller system installed on the ceiling. The panels are moved along the track or stacked together, depending on the room arrangement you require.

Movable walls are popular in offices, educational establishments and hotels – anywhere that can benefit from adaptable spatial arrangements.

How do movable wall systems operate?

There are three types of movable wall operation systems: manual, semi-automated, and fully automated. Let’s explore each in more depth:

Manually operated systems

With manually controlled movable walls, all aspects of operating the system are done by hand. To open up the room or divide it, the individual panels are pushed manually, one by one, into position. Shifting the panels isn’t strenuous, as these walls are designed to be effortlessly manoeuvred by individuals.

Activating the pressure seals, which are what lock the panels together and provide an acoustic barrier, is also completed manually. This is typically completed using either a crank handle or a key-operated mechanism.

Manual types are typically the most affordable style of movable walls, so they’re a great option if you’re buying on a budget or won’t be using the system excessively.

Semi-automated

With this style of movable wall, the panels are moved the same as with a standard manual model – by pulling them across by hand. However, they differ in terms of how the pressure seals are operated. With semi-automated movable walls, the seals are controlled via a button which requires a power source.

Electrically powered sealing enables greater acoustic performance by preventing noise from passing through.

Fully-automated

Easily the most advanced and convenient movable partition on the market, fully automated walls are high-specification walls that make life simpler when it comes to separating your rooms.

This style doesn’t require any manual effort to operate – instead, the movement of the panels and seals is controlled by a motorised system, and the seals lock into place automatically to provide exceptional acoustic insulation.

Fully-automated movable wall partitions require a power source and are the most expensive type available, due to their additional parts and high-tech features.
